Home Owners Need To Start Going For Sash Windows Because They Are Unsurpassed

By Andrew Brentford

Sash windows comprise of movable parts called sashes. The sashes are responsible for holding glasses in a vertical or horizontal position. The windows are also called hung sash, and usually slide when opening or closing. The technology developed first from the inventions of Robert Hooke.

Notable example of such invention is in England at Ham House. This was the first place where the technology was used. Victorian and Georgian houses exhibit this technology more than many households in the world. These houses had six panel glasses which were arranged vertically. Different buildings were later developed with less number of glasses. Security of people is ensured when using this technology.

Springs are used in the sash windows to make them move to any direction without problems. Different materials other than springs can also be used, provided they are able to hold the sashes. Users determine the size of the sash they require in their building according to their needs. Most homes use those that are less than one meter, while churches and other public places use two meters and above. The size of the building also dictates the overall size of the window to be used.

To aid the overall operation, the weight of the panel is fitted with heavy metal like steel. This is done to make the window frame operate without any breakage. The weight is often linked to the sash windows by a long cord that is fitted with a pulley on top of the frame. When pulleys are not available, spring balances are used instead.

The technology is currently embraced by many people because of its many advantages. A family can decide to make one side of the window open while closing the other when desiring to have fresh air in their rooms. Escaping hot air can be released by opening the lower parts. Glass and different other materials can be used depending on the needs of the users.

Currently there are different companies that are producing the materials. Such companies also have their own engineers who patronize the houses of people to fix breakages. Users are constantly advised by these companies to remind their children to open and close their windows slowly to avoid breakages. Oil is used to lubricate the corners where hinges are fitted. This is necessary as it reduces friction when operating the panes.

Hinges are fitted on one side only. This allows for strong locks when the windows are not in use. The other side is left to give room for cleaning. The side also allows users to escape easily during fires and other hazards. People in the United States use the term hung sash window because their windows are usually double with two different movements. A hung window comprises of two panes, which move up and down. This type gives users more advantage when they desire to use one side. Churches use hung types because of their vast nature.

Most home owners use softwood instead of glass because it is a cheap material. The only disadvantage of using softwood is that they rot easily when in contact with water and other adverse weather. During hot weather, the wood swells and distorts the overall design of the woodwork. Paint applied in the wood also gets off in the event of rain. This gives a false finish of the overall technology.

Users are always informed to make sure the glass and wood is properly maintained. This increases their strength and they are used for long periods. Glass is commonly used because it keeps the house bright and beautiful. Wood on the other hand leads to darkness unless they are opened during the day. Cleaning of glass and painting of the wood is easy because the panes are moved in either direction without problems.

Different people currently use PVC windows in their houses. The PVC requires less maintenance and is never painted. The use of such materials is acceptable because they are cheap and their wear and tear is low compared to other materials like glass and wood. Safety of residents is guaranteed when using PVC materials.

Majority of home owners use sash windows because of their ability to provide enough fresh air inside a building. They are advantageous to many users because they can be opened from both sides. The top area of the windows allows for hot air escaping while the lower part brings in cool air during hot weather. The use of this technology is now common around the world.
