Venues Where African American Country Singers Can Learn To Play An Instrument

By Amanda Baird

Learning to play a musical instrument is a common goal for many including aspiring african american country singers. Some people may possess a natural talent for music and not need any formal training but by and large many at least need some guidance. Check out several venues that offer music instruction.

Take classes at school. Schools often offer music courses. Instruction is typically offered in a group setting beginning in grade or middle school. At the high school level, beginning instruction may not be available. Students usually only have to pay to rent an instrument from the school or through a music retail store.

Serious students may have the chance to take private lessons via the school system either after school or on the weekend at no further charge to them. Private teaching may allow students to take up an additional instrument not usually offered in the course of the school day such as mandolin, piano, guitar or banjo. In some programs, a music theory class may also be taken.

Sign out for classes in the community. People that do not want to take music classes at school may want to look into classes in their community. Recreation centers occasionally offer music classes mainly in piano or guitar. These courses are often restricted to school-aged kids. Courses are not free but discount rates may be offered based on good grades or income.

Look into adult education programs. An adult education center may offer music classes. Guitar is probably the most common instrument instruction is offered on. The instruction at an adult education center is generally inexpensive, very basic and in a group setting. Adult education classes generally not available to anyone enrolled in an elementary or secondary public school.

Music instrument retail stores sometimes offer music lessons. Generally, lessons are on a one-on-one basis but group lesson are sometimes held, especially when school is not being held. Private lessons, though more costly, may allow an individual to learn faster. Lessons at a music retail store are generally open to people of all ages.

Other venues offer private lessons. They include community centers, churches and private music studios. Another option is to contract with a music teacher. Independent music teachers often post ads on general classified websites. An independent music teacher may or may not have a degree in education or much experience teaching. Try to interview several music teachers before entering into an agreement for lessons.

Consider taking classes at a music school. Music schools offer diploma and sometimes degree programs in music performance. Generally, they do not offer instruction in other academic areas. Music schools sometimes offer classes to the community. This learning option may be more expensive since it is offered by an institution of higher learning. The fast pace in which someone can learn may be worth the extra expense, though.

Investigate several free training resources. If african american country singers cannot afford lessons, a few other options are available. Several websites host print and video tutorials. Additionally, training manuals may be a useful resource. Free resources may require more someone to spend a lot of time trying out various manuals and videos. Search online or at an area library for more information.
