Marriage License Records Quick Search

By Claire Dowell

The state of Ohio is considered as an open state. The implementation of the Freedom of Information Act has made it easy for the local residents to obtain a copy of an Ohio marriage license public record anytime.

Residents of Ohio use the marriage certificate for a number of reasons. It is one of the primary sources of information when conducting research on the family history. The information that can be obtained in the file is used to update the family tree. Another use of this document is for government transactions. There are requests in the government that would call for a copy of such files. Requests that involve the couple's finances like insurance would require such files to proceed. A rather unique use of this document is when one wants to check on the marital status of an individual. Those who plan to get married would do this to make sure they are going to marry a person who is really single.

Traditional marriage records in Ohio would only have the names of the bride and the groom as well as the date and the place of where the marriage took place. Because of the increasing demands and use of such document, the information that can be obtained from it has also changed over time. Now, the marriage certificate would show the maiden name of the bride. Other relevant information that can be obtained from the document includes the personal information of the couple such as their birth details and occupation. The names of the couple's parents and those who were witnesses to the marriage are also indicated on the file.

Getting a copy of a marriage certificate in the state of Ohio needs to be done by the couple themselves. Their immediate relatives can also file the request provided that they have authority to do so. Others should also have a special permission in order to obtain a copy of the marriage records of other people. A processing fee has to be paid in order to proceed with the request. The fee would range from $.05 up to $5 depending on the request. It is also important to provide the basic information about the file being requested. The contact details of the one who requested the document has to be provided as well which will only be used for verification purposes.

Getting a copy of a marriage certificate can be done at the Ohio's Historical Society. Unfortunately, the office can only release documents which have been registered since 1949, otherwise, requests has to be done at the probation court at the county where the couple got married. Requesting for such documents can be also done via mail order but the results can be obtained after several days.

With the development of the Internet, marriage license search is now possible online. With this, the search is faster and convenient. Going to any office is no longer necessary since the search can be done anywhere there is Internet connection. One can save even more time since the results of the search are displayed in the computer screen after doing just a few clicks on the mouse.
