Everything You Need To Know About Quranists

By Olivia Cross

Quaranism is a branch of the Islamic faith, of which the Quran is the central religious text. Followers of Islam believe the Quran is a revelation from God. While many followers of Islam use other texts apart from the Quran for guidance, Quranists, on the other hand, use the Quran as their sole source of philosophy.

The three faiths have a lot more in common than many people realize. All have their foundation in the same family, the family of Abraham. This is the story of Abraham as it is written in the Old Testament of the Christian Bible. It is meant to be used as a source of information. It is not an evangelistic tool.

The story begins in the Garden of Eden. Prior to the Creation, God had been bored and lonely. He made the Earth and everything in it with the intention of creating Man. His intention was for Man to procreate and multiply. This way, He would have an unlimited pool of individuals with whom he could form close relationships. He created Adam and Eve to be the father and mother of all mankind. God gave them only one rule, and that was not to eat the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge.

Satan, a former archangel of God, had other ideas. He was insanely jealous of the new pair. One day, he caught Eve unawares in the Garden. Posing as a snake, or serpent, he lied to her and told her that it was okay to eat the forbidden fruit. So she did, and she shared it with Adam.

God was furious. He had given them everything. All He had asked in return was one little thing, not to eat the fruit, and they went and did it anyway. They were thrown out of heaven. Centuries later, the descendants of Adam and Eve had discovered lower levels of sin and spent their lives doing their own thing rather than obeying God's principles. God despaired of his creation, and sent a flood to destroy the whole sorry lot. The only ones spared were Noah and his family.

Generations later, God noticed that Abraham, one of Noah's descendants, was a righteous man. God loved him so much, that he told Abraham and his wife, Sarah, that their children would outnumber the stars. They were getting on a bit and, childless, Sarah grew impatient that God might not fulfill His promise. She arranged for Abraham to have a child with her maid, Hagar. They had a boy named Ishmael.

That was until Sarah finally had a son, whom they named Isaac, by Abraham. At this point, Ishmael was 13 years old. Sarah had no further interest in Ishmael, and sent him and his mother packing. God promised Hagar that Ishmael would father a great nation. He did, and that nation became the Arab nation, out of which grew the Islamic faith.

So there it is, the story of Abraham. That is why Judaism, Islam and Christianity are called the Abrahamic religions, because they all have their roots in this one man's family. While there are some major fundamental differences, there is more to unite them than there is to divide them.
