What You Need To Know About Helping Orphans

By Elaine Guthrie

There are many ways that you can make a difference in the world and help those individuals who are less fortunate. One popular method that many people choose is helping orphans. Whether it is due to war, poverty or illness, there are many children living all over the world who reside in orphanages instead of with their family. If you would like to offer assistance, here are some tips that you can use to decide how to give, what to give, and where to give it.

The first thing to do is to consider what form you want your donation to take. Money, items and even labor can all be appreciated. Not every aid organization will have the same needs, however, so once you know how you want to help, you can then start looking for groups who need the kind of aid you have available.

There are orphans in many different locations. For example, there may be quite a few who need assistance in Sonora Mexico. By narrowing down the area where you want to direct your assistance, you can then find out what is needed most urgently. This may make it easier for you to determine what form your assistance will take.

Once you have used the geographic method of narrowing down your search, you can then see if there are already aid organizations working in that area. By utilizing these as a way to deliver your donations you may find that your donations have a much bigger impact than if you sent them over on their own.

Once you have reviewed the needs that a specific group of orphans or a particular orphanage has, you may find it easier to take multiple types of donations to that group at the same time. For example, many groups choose to donate items as well as traveling directly to the area they are trying to assist in order to deliver the items and to offer aid in the form of labor in order to help them out in this way as well.

Items are always a good form of aid. Examples of items that may be in high demand include clothing, shoes, eyeglasses and food. Different areas will have different needs at any given point in time and so if you know you will be working with a particular organization or donating to a specific orphanage it might be worthwhile to contact the organization and find out what will be of most use. Make sure that items that are donated are in good condition.

While it may be tempting to simply box the items up, you may find it easier to transport the items to their final destination. Keep in mind that you may need to fill out specific paperwork to import items if you have a large number of items that you will be sending to the orphans you want to help. If you contact an orphanage that will be on the receiving end of your donations they may be able to give you assistance and guidance when filling out paperwork.

If you have decided not to deliver the items in person but are in a position to do so, you may want to rethink your decision. It can make cutting through bureaucratic red tape easier if you are on hand to discuss things personally and it can also be wonderful to see what a positive reaction your donations will receive.
