Sourcing New Or Used Harley Davidson Parts

By Barbara Reynolds

Any owner of a motorcycle will at some point need to replace certain items or add additional ones to suit their own taste. When buying Harley Davidson parts there are a few things to consider beforehand and some research is needed to ensure that the right choice is made. Due to the cost of some items it is worth shopping around and pricing up parts from various sources.

A vast amount of parts are held in stock at motor factors, main dealers and spares stores in many towns and cities. Virtually everything from complete engines and rebuild kits down to the smallest electric switch can be found. Following a major breakdown or problem it is advisable where possible to use approved or authorized items to replace the broken ones rather than a less costly alternative.

Many online retailers also sell replacements for these motorcycles and most will be shipped next day for an additional fee. Often these items will be cheaper than buying from a store but bear in mind that after adding the courier cost this is not always the case. Most couriers will charge by the weight of the package and the heavier it is the more it will cost.

A large number of parts can also be found in junk yards and reused to make repairs or replace faulty components. This is often a more cost effective option but checks should be made to ensure that these are not faulty and fit for purpose. When using second hand parts it is a good idea to take the old one along to make sure it is the same as the one being purchased.

Should an owner be buying components for the purpose of personalizing a bike or simply making improvements there are many options. Hand crafted leather side bags, chromed wheels and bars and custom painted tanks and fenders can enhance the look of a bike. Many owners decide to personalize their model and these additions ensure that it will be unique.

Prior to making changes to a bike with custom additions there are a few things to consider before making a large outlay of cash. A lot of owners clubs and organizations will disqualify a modified bike from show competitions as it is not a stock model. Another thing to bear in mind is that if fitting aftermarket items rather than originals some guarantees may be invalidated so it is worth speaking to an expert in advance.

When replacing items such as engines, brakes, suspension or exhausts it is worth seeking the advice of a mechanic. A qualified technician will be able to advise on where to buy from and how much to pay especially in the case of older models. If the work is being done by them they may choose to source the bits themselves and this is sometimes a safer bet.

It is always preferable to keep any old usable items after replacement ones have been fitted to the vehicle. If In the future the motorcycle is put up for sale or traded in for another model these items can be kept with the original bike. This is also important when selling a bike after it has been modified as some riders when buying may wish to return it to a factory specification model.
