How To Prepare When Joining Dance Competitions

By Raymond Morgan

Dancing starts usually as a hobby then people will become more passionate about it gradually and want to become a professional dancer. Most of them begins when they were young by attending workshops and lessons that teaches a particular type of dance. This will help them in becoming more skilled in performing and helps with gaining confidence.

Competing with others is also a part of being a dancer and it can either be done individually or by group depending on the event. There are some dance competitions in New Jersey that you can join and try to be the best among the others. Here are some essential tips for preparing yourself and your teammates for an upcoming contest.

Joining in these competitions would let you experience different kinds of emotions that a person can feel aside from being an exhausting activity. Mental and emotional preparation is needed because of this. You may feel happy to compete, disappointed when mistakes happen, nervous before, during and after the routine, sadness when losing or joy when winning.

Remember to keep your chill, take your time and think straight when preparing before you dance. Check if all things are ready which includes every piece of the costume you have to wear and the accessories needed. Doing this helps you relax knowing you did not forget anything important for the contest which prevents experiencing additional stress specially when something has been forgotten.

Determine how you spend the time right before your turn to dance because every dancer has different ways in handling their jitters. Some may meditate silently and calmly to relax their minds to keep positive thoughts and push away negative ones. Others get themselves excited and repeatedly review their routine or others just talk with each other while waiting.

Find out the way your teammates handle their nervousness because they may not be the same with yours. Stay away from those who meditate for mind relaxation if you like getting yourself excited. Do not forget your warm up exercises and let everyone in the team perform them because this helps in getting your body prepared in dancing on stage.

Walk confidently towards your assigned position in the stage and respectfully acknowledge the judges in front of you. Take deep breaths which helps you calm and relax yourself and have the oxygen you need which is very vital. Remember that the judges want to get entertained also even though their job is in scoring your routine.

When the performance begins, do not rush the steps and keep your mind on the routine. Getting distracted might cause you to make a mistake so stay focused on your choreography. Use your whole body to execute a routine including your face and let them feel your energy and love for dancing.

Keep smiling while leaving the stage whether you have performed the dance greatly or not so well. Congratulate your teammates for performing what you have practiced for days and be thankful for being able to join this competition with them. Accept whatever the result would be and prepare for the next one with more improvements.
