There may be problems in the marriage early on as well as issues that arise later on when people are more mature. When the honeymoon stage is over, people will find that there are other things that come up from time to time. They will notice flaws in one another. They may begin to blame one another. This is why counseling is important. Individuals will find that it may be themselves with the faults.

It is important to deal with these underlying feelings because one finds that it contributes to the marriage or family. For example, people who have been sexually abused will have problems with intimacy. A person who has been physically abused, may have problems with anger.

Children may come up after a couple of years and this is tricky in the beginning as well. While it is exciting, a couple will also find that there are many issues that come up. There are practical things to look at which will ensure that the couple spend quality time together.

Support is essential during this time, especially when it is one partner or member of the family who is struggling with something. It can be a disorder or a complication which effects the rest of the unit. It can go back to the childhood years when someone has been abused, and this will most likely affect the marriage.

One member of the family can develop an addiction or a disorder, such as depression or anxiety. This can affect everyone else. For example, if the parents are paying attention to one child, it will affect the other child because they may feel that they are being neglected. This is something to bear in mind.

Children need to be counselled, whether it is parents who are not getting on with one another. Parents may be going through a divorce. There could be a child with a disorder. It is necessary to pay attention to the other siblings as well. One will also think of referring individuals to other therapists, such as play therapists or cognitive behaviour therapists, for example.
