It's important to learn how to get started in acting in terms of learning the craft and getting known in the industry, to put one on the right path for finding work. Knowing which steps to take and carrying them out is the beginning to becoming a professional actor or actress.

Training at a post-secondary institution offers the most comprehensive program for performers to learn the craft. Students will become familiar with all the aspects of acting and gain practice through work in numerous productions. Education should be ongoing, even for those whom have graduated, who can benefit from taking lessons from a drama coach. It's ideal to become skilled in many types of performance, as this opens up more opportunities.

It is important to have some quality "headshots" taken by a talented photographer who is experienced in taking this type of images. There should be an assortment of shots, close-up, full-body, formal, informal, color, and black and white. Prints are needed to attach to resumes, but there should also be digital images for websites and other online applications.

Developing an organized resume is the next step. It needs to list any productions the performer has appeared in, as well as where they trained and which program they have completed. Lessons and workshops should also be mentioned, as should specific skills such as acrobatics or foreign accents.

A reputable agent can be a real asset to an actor. Since these people have many industry connections, they receive a daily influx of casting calls. They are determined to help those they represent find work, since agents receive a cut of any monies earned and only get paid when the actors do.

The more acting experience a performer gains, the better the chances are of finding more work in the future. Even non-paying parts should be considered early in one's career just for the sake of resume-building. Community theaters, signing up as a background character in student films, or as an extra in a film are all a good starting place.

Gradually, as a performer is seen at more auditions, he or she will gain recognition from casting directors who will consider them for more roles. Making a good impression when attending auditions is imperative. The performer must be well-prepared, courteous, properly attired, and punctual. It is very valuable to "network" with those working in the industry and to possibly join an actor's union as well.

Patience and persistence are two qualities a performer must have in order to be successful. When discovering how to get started in acting, they must recognize that in most cases it takes time to make a name for oneself and the only way this is going to happen is by actively getting out there and going to as many auditions as possible. Rejection must be accepted as a reality, but eventually it can pave the way to success.
