Finding Suitable Vintage Harley Davidson Parts

By David Jones

If you own a bike, you may need to locate spares after a breakdown or to modify your ride. With bikes that are in production this can be simple and spares are easily sourced from auto stores. If you own an older motorcycle, searching for Vintage Harley Davidson parts may be a little more difficult.

There are a few places to look when trying to hunt down obsolete spares that are no longer made. Locating parts can often be a time consuming process and often the items will be unavailable and cannot be found. The first thing to do is to take a picture of the item and this will enable you to compare it to any replacements.

A good starting point to find spares is on the internet sites that now specialize in vintage parts. A large number of these web sites have thousands of items in stock from early model bikes to recent ones. Their page listings will feature pictures and descriptions as well as prices and there will be some contact details so that you can speak with them.

Another place to visit is one of the main dealerships that are approved by the factory. Many of these dealers will hold stocks of spares and although they may not advertise obsolete parts, they may still have some in their stores. If they do not it is still worth speaking with them as they may point you in the right direction and know a place where you can find what you are looking for.

Recycling yards are also well worth a visit too as they often have old bikes. Hundreds of motorcycles can be found in these compounds after being taken off road after accidents or serious breakdowns. Many of these firms will take any useful parts off the bike and hold them in their store rooms but taking a few tools along is a good idea in case you need to remove any spares.

A Harley Davidson owners club can also be a great place to find vintage spares that are unavailable elsewhere or discontinued. A lot of club members who have collected spares for years often have stocks parts that they will sell and trade with others. You do not have to be a paid up member to buy from them but it is a good idea to join and they will help you out if they can.

When you have located the replacements and have fitted them it is worth keeping the old ones as you may be able to recycle them and help out another owner. Some parts may be reused or sold on to another biker who is looking for an elusive spare. When replacing items such as fuel tanks and brake systems it is important to have them inspected before using or selling them.

It is always better to try and fit factory made spares to your bike if possible. Re manufactured parts can be used and they will function well but they can reduce the value of your classic bike. It is also worth taking into consideration that a lot of owners clubs and show associations will not let you enter your bike into a show if it is not fitted with genuine Harley parts.
