The Fashion of Women's Shorts

By Val Mead

As winter rolls back and spring creeps into view, it is time to get those legs in shape and ready to show off, preparing for the latest seasonal must-have in women's designer fashion: shorts.

This versatile garment now often marks the coming of the sunshine months better than a calendar but due to their flirtatious and flaunting nature, they only became a mildly acceptable item of attire in women's fashion around the 1930s. Nowadays they have happily become the mainstay of many a spring and summer wardrobe in a range of colours and styles that can be dressed up or down in a variety of modes. Let's be honest, most women wouldn't embark on a holiday abroad without at least one pair tucked neatly away in their suitcase and even when the weather disappoints us; teamed with a pair of tights, your shorts will surely not.

The 'Daisy duke' short remains a classic, with its cut-off length and frayed edges first showcased in the 1970s and named after the popular television show 'The Dukes of Hazard' where the shorts were worn by a main character. Other trends may have faded but cut-off shorts remain popular with longer legged female. They have been adapted though, favouring the neater, tailored look of turn-ups rather than the original, rough-edged cut-off. This designer denim has been brought into homes by makes such as G-Star, Levi and 7 for all mankind.

It's not just in denim that Daisy Dukes are being produced; thanks to the creations of Tibi, Diane von Furstenberg and Thread Social, shorts can be found in an array 70s revived and reinvented styles including leather, suede and cord. Or add a touch of the glamorous with lace, jacquard and sequins. The cut-off shorts are not only transcending day-time to night, with Sessun's latest feature of a lavish pair of gold mustard shorts, this item will easily spill over into winter when teamed with tights and heavy knitwear. Leather brings a rawer edge to the short with Alice by Temperley, IRO and Theory.

Silk and linen shorts have rippled back onto the catwalk for that lighter summery feel from the likes of Miu Miu. While a smart, longer look comes from YMC (You Must Create) with their flowing culottes which present another style favourite this spring of the black and white check pattern.

With a wide range of designs and styles there is something to suit everyone's tastes. Multi-colours will be dominating the colour palette for most of the spring collections, but shorts can be found in more subdued neutrals, black, white and navies. YMC have also released shorts with a pleated front in corduroy, making shorts suitable for a curvier, fuller figure. For the athletic build a high-waisted, flat front short is most flattering.

The range of shorts available is amazing, and even the versatility of one pair can be transformed when matched with a silk blouse, casual tee or knit jumper. Your must-have shorts can then be accessorised with loose waist ties and beads. With or without tights, show off your legs this season in a pair of shorts.
