The Way The World Gets Georgia Pecans

By Rena Hudson

Pecans a very popular and delicious nut that has been the center of a lot of desert and snacking enjoyment in America some number of years years. In the year 1772, the very first tree got planted in the USA, and in early 1800's, they became a booming industry. The state of Georgia produces well over half of the United States production of the nut due to their hospitable environment for production of these nuts. Making Georgia pecans a very big industry in the state.

On average, the trees can get 70 to 100 feet tall. Normally each limb sprout around 9 to 15 leaflets. The nuts grow in clusters of 2 to 6 nuts per each cluster. Each single nut has its own shell on it that splits in 4 directions when the nuts are ripe.

How many nuts the tree will grow on it is determined by its age. This can be less than normal if they are harmed by pests and diseases. Younger trees are capable of producing around 50 pounds where older trees are able to grow about 150 pounds each year.

During the past 10 years, there has been a lot of research on the nutritional values of the nut. Having a diet rich with them has proven health benefits. They can lower cholesterol and blood pressure. They also are known to provide weight control.

In the course of the study done at a college in Massachusetts, pecans were added to the diet of several mice. The mice who received the most nuts in their diet had better health overall than those who were receiving less or none. They found that it was the vitamin E in the nuts that caused the best results. It was discovered that it seemed to decrease the amount of brain cell depletion that you would normally see over time. Pecans also provide a total of 19 different minerals and vitamins. They are very high in antioxidants too.

So that they keep up with supply demands, America has begun to rely on Mexico for imported nuts. Mexico has the ability to produce very high quality pecans. Their trees and conditions actually surpass those of Georgia. Mexicos production has has picked up and more because of the demand by the US for their nuts so that they can keep up with their countrys demands. America needs more nuts than ever because of the fact that they are now doing the same as Mexico and shipping their nuts all over the world.

Georgia normally harvests their nuts during the fall but they are available to be purchased every month of the year. Many of the growers in Georgia sell their nuts online of which makes them available for purchase all hours of the day and night. The amounts of pre-shelled nuts has climbed over the years due to better advances in nut production.

Since the prices of these nuts have gone up over the past few years, theft has become a problem on some Georgia farms. There have been in the amounts of 1400 pounds of nuts stolen from one South Georgia orchard. Seems people are doing whatever they must to get themselves some good ole Georgia pecans.
