Make A Difference With Clothing Donation

By Kristen Baird

Many are making the recycling process a normal part of their lives, especially when it comes to nonperishable goods like clothing. Recycling is not only good for the environment but can help those who may be struggling financially. Clothing donation centers are growing as people are finding multiple uses for them.

Whether in Mechanicsburg, PA or the opposite end of town, people from all walks of life have needs. Wearing clothes is no exception and consumers are always looking for a way to save money. Especially clothing items that have been lightly worn or may be out of style at the moment can make a big difference. Parents can help as little ones tend to outgrown clothes in their first few years.

People who shop often love to find discounted buys whenever possible, whether they are looking for rare pieces or looking to complete a wardrobe. There are people who will only wear an item a handful of times before retiring it for good. While some may think this is a waste, it is mostly part of an image that an individual wants to convey in their business communication.

Donation centers often keep their clients, or customers, in mind when accepting new items. There are many operations that will not accept visibly stained or soiled items. They often do not have the resources for anything other than basic cleaning. Unless it is a high end designer, they sometimes will not accept anything in need of a tailor or extensive cleaning.

Creative persons often discover great finds that can be constructed into a new item. Many times, they can make repairs or repurpose to suit another need. For instance, old bridal gowns can make good window dressing or an after five dress. If the item is made from a washable fabric, they may use this to make a something for younger children.

Home accessories, clothing appliques, and decorative items are some of the simple things that can be made from old clothes. Some fabric glue and scissors are all that is needed to create a unique design or refresh a wardrobe. Retro fabric designs or vintage pieces are great for this.

Donating old or unused clothing is a great way for people to clear space in their home. There are some who often buy new clothes but will not throw out things that are out of style or no longer fit. People do this for a number of reasons but one way to compromise is to keep a few items or buy extra storage space. This can also help someone who is less fortunate.

The number of places to donate clothing is growing by the day. Many offer tax write offs as well as other services like free or low cost pickup. Anyone can look up additional resources online to find places near their home to donate or buy. These centers are no longer just for the disenfranchised but those looking to save money, regardless of income.
