Volunteering In The Lutheran Church's Sunday School

By Kristen Baird

Governed by faith and molded by the Christian belief, it sure feels wonderful to walk in the light of Jesus. While many have been mystified by His existence, others simply think of Him as a mere myth with whom the weak draws strength in times of crisis. Questions of His divinity and grace have been all over but what is there to ask when His love for mankind has been manifested for years? Today, more and more people have become less religious, and worse, many are becoming non-believers especially in developed countries.

Christianity is the biggest religion so far and one of the oldest denominations therein is Protestantism. Being part of the biggest discipleship is something that brings genuine euphoria to people who have been ruled by Christian doctrines although some of the critical values of their religion have been subtly disregarded over the years especially by the new generation. Nonetheless, church leaders have been keen on reviving the lost values through implementing programs with which the Lutheran church Wilmington has been actively involved.

Lutheranism was founded by Martin Luther, a priest in the Order of the Augustinian Recollects that later referred as a father of the reformation. The Lutheranism principles are basically patterned after the practices and beliefs of the Catholic Church. Christening is a big part of this movement that is why infants and believing adults are necessitated to be baptized.

Meanwhile, for someone who wants to help draw the lost flock together while retaining the values taught by Jesus, it can be a wonderful idea to volunteer as a teacher to the Sunday school. This is pretty much easier than a regular school. Teachers need not prepare difficult quizzes for their students or get them to go to places where their lessons are best understood.

Catechism is fun. Students will not only be introduced to God's divinity, they will also have plenty of chance to make great friends around. And what could be more exciting than knowing not just the spiritual aspects of life but how to make this more interesting through becoming part of a bigger group?

There are countless churches out there with a great need for volunteers. The thing is, interested individuals might have to serve longer hours whenever necessary. Volunteers, however, are going to be asked about their preferred time before agreeing to the volunteer work.

There will be initial background investigation upon application but applicants need not worry about it. If they have nothing to hide, then nothing can get in their way. This, however, requires them to be members of the church. If not, it does not necessarily restrict them from becoming one.

Being a volunteer does not mean one has to be entirely tied up with all religious activities. It is important to know that volunteers are there to serve the community rather than the mendicants raise money for themselves or the group. Of course, they can if they want to.

There is a big difference between a volunteer teacher and a missionary. For people interested in Catechism, they do not have to go out to spread the word of God unless they want it. And besides, they can never be anywhere without the ministry's approval.
