Can Acne Scars Be Treated?

By Edward Spencer

Acne is a perennial problem especially for women, with its sudden appearance and the permanent scars that it causes. Howsoever you hate it, acne is an undeniable part of most teenagers' lives and a fair amount of effort must be put behind fighting these ugly bumps and preventing their reappearance.

Acne is a condition caused due to the reaction of bacteria and excessive sebum secretion by the glands in the skin. As the condition starts to heal, collagen, which is a protein, is created in the inner layer of the skin. On the amount of collagen falling low, tiny depressions develop on the skin and on its amount being excessive, distinct protrusions appear. Both these cases cause acne scars. Teenagers are normally the worst affected from acne as the hormone levels increase during puberty causing more sebum secretion.

Among the typical reasons of acne infection are application of beauty products that are not appropriate for the kind of skin, taking contraceptive medication, intake of medicinal drugs, and hereditary reasons. Certain lifestyle factors like stress, unhealthy diet, and living in a polluted area can also lead to acne. However, contrary to general belief, there is no scientific connection between oily or fast food and acne.

Notwithstanding the variety of herbal products that claim to cure acne and that are offered to consumers at different shops, it is better to get medical opinion if the condition worsens or if it keeps on recurring. Abstaining from pressing the acne or poking it with any sharp object is a must to avoid aggravation of acne.

An increasing number of people are also resorting to cosmetic treatments to remove acne scars and to get back a spotless skin. Surgery and laser treatment are among the most successful methods of permanently removing acne scars, but many other new treatments are also available these days. You must visit a good dermatologist who would be able to determine your type of skin and suggest an appropriate treatment.
