Traffic Jams in Belfast

By David Gleeson

Over the last few years Belfast has grown as a city. The culture, tourism, and shopping of the city has grown hugely but so has the traffic. In a recent survey of European cities it was found that Belfast was the 7th most congested city. Like nearly all cities, Belfast has its fair share of rush hour traffic, but you never would have imagined that its traffic congestion levels were similar to those experienced in London and Dublin.

People blame different things for this. Some people blame the lack of public transport for this problem. Other people think that we have just become over reliant on cars. While others believe it is the unreliability of public transport that is the problem. No matter what the reason is it is clear that Belfast has now become worse than Paris for traffic jams.

Worse than Paris? I hear you ask unbelievably. Yes, you read correctly. When people think of driving in Paris they think busy streets and congested roundabouts. Paris is such a big city with a huge population driving through it. How could Belfast ever compare withParis? The Paris mayor is even considering taking further action to reduce their traffic problems. They are thinking of closing the left bank expressway to all traffic. The hope is that people will start using public transport. But there are fears that this will just congest other parts of the city.

I can't see Belfast following Paris' example just yet so for now we just have to accept the fact that we will encounter congestion at some point of our journeys.

But while you are sitting in your car stressed out in the traffic jams at least you can relax about your car insurance. AXA Direct offer great car insurance deals from 249 and if you become too stressed why not leave the traffic behind and escape on an AXA Leisure break, just one of the great benefits of AXA car insurance.
