Easy And Effective School Fundraising Information

By Rosemary Berger

Issues that aren't thought to be critical aspects of the federal government's mandate to provide a free education can end up falling by the wayside if a community doesn't come to their rescue. Sports, music, art, and various valuable modules and activities have all ended up on the chopping block. A good way to maintain these choices for students would be to have school fundraising events to aid them.

We all have seen a customary fund-raiser-- parents or students selling baked goods, snack bars, or asking for sponsorship for an event such as a walk-a-thon. While these are generally oldies-but-goodies, there are other up-to-date choices, including recycling old ink jet printer cartridges with internet companies.

Food is a customary choice for selling at school fund-raisers. Candies, cookies, pastries, and anything sweet are common choices, in addition to a developing movement towards healthy foods and baking kits. Items may be homemade, or purchased at a bulk cost and resold for a profit.

Besides sales, events are another traditional fund-raising option. Events include such things as the popular walks and runs, where instead of sponsorship benefiting breast cancer research, it rewards your school, as well as more innovative choices. Read-a-thons are one of the less traditional options, where children are sponsored to read books, as an alternative to going for a walk or running.

Fund-raisers that have not already been done ten times this year might attract more attention from the local community, which is always good from a money-making viewpoint. Something like a jail and bail, for instance, might stop people who would walk past a bake sale. This event incorporates volunteers being 'jailed' followed by pleading with community members for enough money for their 'bail.'

Using an item for sale that continuously reminds folks of your school's continuing needs is advisable. Bracelets, t-shirts, hats, or other attire can be tagged with fun, eye-catching logos and then when people put them on, your non-profit gets free advertising. Tailor your offering to the group you are expecting to purchase them, so that they sell well.

There usually has to be an organizer for any fundraiser to be successful. This person is mainly responsible for ensuring that all the other volunteers understand what they're doing and when they are supposed to be doing it by. Certain fund-raisers call for more organization and energy than others, so choose one that you know your community of volunteers can handle. School fundraising can occasionally feel like a chore, but it doesn't always have to be.
