An Expectant Mother's Guide To Purchasing A Nursing Bra

By Vicki Garrett

Shopping for maternity clothing can be fun and exciting. Most women enjoy building their wardrobe by buying tops and pants or skirts that will fit them well as their bodies change. Buying a maternity or nursing bra or pregnancy underwear may not occur to them and yet these two garments can help a woman look and feel her best while she is expecting.

When a woman gets pregnant, her body undergoes a lot of changes in both her stomach region and in her breasts. A woman's breasts will get larger and heavier as they get ready to produce milk. While a woman may be able to wear her existing underwear, maternity or nursing bras will likely become a necessity, especially if a woman has larger breasts to begin with.

Although breastfeeding brassieres can be worn during pregnancy, there are differences between maternity and nursing models. While both are built for support, comfort and modesty, models that are made for nursing are designed so that a woman can un-clip the cup and open it in order to let the baby have access to the breast.

Brassieres that are bought in pregnancy need to fit just as well as any that would be worn at other times. The straps should be wide enough that they do not dig into the skin and the band should fit low on the back and not ride up. This provides the framework of support that a woman's breasts need to stay comfortable and to prevent sagging.

Many women find that they end up buying two different bra sizes. One generally comes in late pregnancy. The breasts have started to grow and are likely fuller than they were before conception. Although a woman may think that this is the largest her breasts will get, she may be surprised when her milk supply fully comes in. Some new mothers may find that they increase by as much as a cup size and will need to purchase larger bras because of this.

In the past, these brassieres were not as common but now that women are breastfeeding their babies more a wider range of styles have come out. It is possible to find comfortable athletic versions, full cup versions and even lacy under wire models that are great for women who want to start feeling sexy and alluring even while they are nursing. You want to make sure that the versions you buy will not irritate or scratch your breasts and that they will not pinch or block your milk ducts as this can cause serious medical issues.

Many women do not try on brassieres before they buy them and may not know how a particular one will fit. This can be a problem, since poorly fitting bras can actually pinch a woman's milk ducts and impair her milk production. Make sure that when you do try one on, you can un-clip the flaps and open them fully. You want to make sure that the nipple and areola are both visible as this can help a baby know where to latch on. In the beginning, when a baby is getting used to breastfeeding this is very important.

You can find nursing bras in maternity clothing stores as well as department stores. Many websites also have them available as well. When purchasing your bras online, it can be helpful to purchase several different sizes and styles so that you can find which ones suit you best. That way, you can send uncomfortable bras back and you will know what size to order in the future. If you want to feel beautiful after giving birth, look for matching sets in fabrics and colors that you love best.
